Every Company is a Tech Company

A few years ago, our CEO, Eric Redmond, wrote a great book called “Deep Tech”-- a book designed to educate business leaders on seven transformative technologies that will shape the world around us.  (As a total side note, you should check out the book– it’s comprehensive yet very accessible.)  In the introduction, Eric quotes a car company board member who said:  “The question is not how fast tech companies will become car companies, but how fast we will become a tech company.”

The idea has only become more relevant with time.  Today, every company is becoming a technology company in some way.  And all of us– whether you were trained as a geologist, a writer, a scientist, a psychologist or anything else– are becoming technologists too.

Does that mean that humans step aside while AI and robots take over?  No. In fact, quite the opposite.  Technology gives us the opportunity to spend less time on tedious, repetitive work- and more time on the work humans do best:  critical thinking, analysis, strategy, creativity, and building support around important ideas.

That shift matters in energy permitting.  Utility-scale energy permit applications are massive– often 500, 5,000 or even 100,000 pages long.  Today, much of that work is still highly manual:  creating documents, updating data, checking for inconsistencies, and ensuring that every change is reflected accurately across thousands of pages..

Even with teams of highly skilled experts working on these applications, we haven’t met many people who enjoy the process of manually updating the same data across a 2,000 page document and checking that every reference is consistent.  That’s where technology can help.

At Permeta, we use AI to help energy developers and permitting teams reduce the manual burden of permitting work– so they can focus more of their time on analysis, decision-making, stakeholder engagement and project execution.  We’re not replacing the experts.  We’re building tools that help experts work faster, smarter and more effectively .

The future of permitting isn’t fewer experts.  It’s better tools for experts.  Permeta is here to help.
